Common hot flash triggers to notice

Written by Dot, for the Dot community. Hot flashes are driven by hormonal changes, but everyday factors can make them more likely or more intense. Triggers differ from woman to woman, which is why noticing your own patterns matters more than following a strict list. Commonly reported triggers include alcohol, especially red wine, caffeine, spicy food, hot drinks, warm rooms, tight or synthetic clothing, smoking, and stress or anxiety. Some women notice more flashes after poor sleep or during busy, pressured days. A simple approach is to keep a short daily note for two to three weeks: when flashes happen, how strong they felt, and what you had eaten, drunk or been doing beforehand. Patterns often appear quickly. You can then experiment with one change at a time, such as swapping an evening glass of wine for a cold alternative, to see whether it makes a difference. Staying active and maintaining a healthy weight may also help over time. For persistent symptoms, a licensed clinician can explain treatment options. This is general education, not medical advice.
