Fezolinetant (brand name Veozah) is a nonhormonal prescription pill approved by the FDA in 2023 to treat moderate to severe hot flashes caused by menopause. It blocks the neurokinin 3 (NK3) receptor in the brain's temperature-control center. Labeling includes a boxed warning about liver injury and requires liver blood tests before and during treatment.
Key label points
Because it contains no hormones, fezolinetant may be an option for people who cannot or prefer not to use hormone therapy. The Menopause Society's 2023 statement includes it among evidence-based nonhormone options.
This summary reflects FDA-approved prescribing information. It is not a complete list of uses, warnings or side effects — read the current label and the Medication Guide or patient information from your pharmacist.
- Boxed warning: serious liver injury has occurred. Blood tests of liver function are done before starting and periodically during treatment.
- Stop and contact a prescriber right away for signs of liver problems: tiredness, nausea, itching, yellowing of skin or eyes, pale stools, dark urine or pain in the upper right abdomen.
- Should not be used with medicines that strongly or moderately inhibit the CYP1A2 enzyme, or by people with cirrhosis or severe kidney impairment.
When to talk with a healthcare professional
- Before starting, stopping or changing any medicine — only a prescriber can decide this with you.
- If you notice a side effect, or take other medicines or supplements that might interact.
When to get prompt care
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine or severe upper-right abdominal pain — seek care promptly.
